Applying for the Indian Air Force under the Agnipath scheme (Agniveervayu) involves several stringent document upload requirements. Unlike standard government exams that simply ask for a regular passport photo, the Air Force mandates a very specific "Slate Photo". Failing to upload the correctly formatted slate photo is the number one reason candidates face rejection during the initial application screening. This guide explains exactly how to meet these rules and how our digital tool can save you hours of frustration.
The official Agniveervayu notification explicitly states that candidates must upload a recent color passport-size photograph taken with a very specific pose. You must hold a black slate in front of your chest. Both hands should be visible holding the edges of the slate horizontally. Crucially, the slate must have your Full Name (as it appears on your 10th certificate) and the Date of Photograph written clearly on it using white chalk. The text on the slate must be written in CAPITAL LETTERS.
Your photograph must have a plain, light-colored background (white is strongly preferred). You must look straight into the camera with a neutral expression. Wearing headgear (except for Sikhs who are permitted to wear turbans), sunglasses, or heavily tinted prescription glasses is strictly prohibited. Furthermore, you must not alter your appearance (e.g., growing a heavy beard or changing your hairstyle) between the time you take the photo and the time you appear for the physical and medical tests, as this will lead to disqualification.
For the online upload portal, the photograph must adhere to standard passport dimensions of 3.5 cm by 4.5 cm. When scanning or resizing digitally, this roughly translates to 413 pixels in width and 531 pixels in height (at 300 DPI). The file format must be exclusively JPG or JPEG. The file size limit is heavily restricted; your image must fall strictly between 10 KB and 50 KB. While some specific Air Force intakes may allow up to 100 KB, aiming for under 50 KB guarantees a successful upload across all defence portals.
Along with the slate photo, you must upload your signature and a left thumb impression. Both must be taken using a dark blue or black ink pen/pad on a plain white sheet of paper. The signature must be mapped to exactly 3.5 cm by 1.5 cm (approximately 140x60 pixels) and compressed to between 10 KB and 50 KB. Remember, signatures entirely in capital block letters will be rejected; you must use a normal running hand. The left thumb impression should be roughly 3 cm by 3 cm (240x240 pixels) and also kept between 10 KB and 50 KB.
If you don't have a physical black slate and white chalk, don't worry. You can take a standard passport-style photo (ensuring your hands are somewhat visible near your chest area to mimic holding a slate) and use our tool to digitally generate the requirement. Upload your image (up to 3 MB), leave the "Add Mandatory Black Slate" toggle activated, and enter your name and date. Our tool will automatically render a highly realistic black slate with white capital letters over your chest area, crop the image to 413x531 pixels, and securely compress it to the 10-50 KB limit right inside your browser.
